Last Week's Unnamed Playlist
Last week Alex was in Vegas with Nick and Dr. Barnett for the BEA conference, so the show was left with Eric and I. We invited some friends up to help us out, and we had a pretty good time.
We were visited by Nick Welsh of the Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song, and he helped us pick some songs.
Eric left early to get some homework done (finals week, ya know) so Rachel Keyser came and helped me finsh up the show.
In case ya missed it, here's the playlist. Enjoy!
Regina Spektor - "Us"
Spoon - "I Turn My Camera On"
Ted Leo and the Pharmasicts - "Timerous Me"
The Bird and the Bee - "Polite Dance Song"
The Veronicas - "Untouched"
The White Stripes - "Doorbell"

BEA Vegas Day 4-1/2, 5, Going on 6
We attended a session about integrated media, the web, and internet radio on the last day of the conference. We also met a professor from Western Kentucky University involved with their student radio station. The conference was a great networking opportunity and it allowed us to see what other schools are doing.
All in all this trip has been a great experience. We learned valuable information about new media, we are inspired and full of new ideas, and using this conference as a benchmark, we feel really good about where we are and how far we have come.
Here's the sad part of the story. Due to mechanical issues, our flight was cancelled after numerous delays. As a result, Alex and I will be missing finals on Monday and will have to reschedule them for later in the week. But we get a bonus night in Vegas if that's any consolation.
Sad part number two. We are exhausted. We are now bunked in a Super 8 motel, and we lost more money in Vegas. However, the Super 8 that we are staying in is "The Largest Super 8 in the World" so that's kinda cool.
Can't wait to wake up at 4:00 AM so we can catch our flight in the morning. Be sure to catch us sometime next week and we'll tell you all about the BEA and LV Nevada.
Peace.

A Word of Caution for the Vegas Guys
Update on Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song: Summer Show, Dance Show during Finals.
Greetings! Nick here, from the Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song! I wanted to let you guys know that The BMKoKHoS WILL continue during the summer, same day, same time! I believe the Sparky Bunny Honey Party Power Hour will air after my show, so tune in to check it out!
Unfortunately, Jess won't be able to host with me most of the time, as she will be in her hometown of Evansville most of the summer, with the exception of London for a study abroad program for a month.
I'm gonna try to have a guest host every week, some from the radio, some of my friends from high school or college, etc.
Have a good finals week and don't forget to tune in this week, as we will be having a super fun dance show, with such hits as Sandstorm playing! Check it out!

BEA Vegas Day 3
As we near the end of our trip I have come to the conclusion that time and space do not exist in Las Vegas. The architecture is very strange. Nothing seems real, everything is a replica of something else, you see the same 10-12 mega resorts on the horizon no matter where you go, there are no clocks in the casinos, and the signage is oddly placed literally blocks away from the actual location of the places that they represent. I never know where I am or what time it is, but I guess none of that matters in Vegas.
Oh well...let's get to the nuts and bolts.
Today we slept in until 10:00am. That's 1:00pm back in Louisville, KY. We also had muffins for breakfast, which is ironic because I have this weird dilemma where I can't stand the sound of the word muffin. I'm not sure why, I think I just needed to have a word to hate and that happened to be the one I settled on.
But I was able to conquer my fear in the process of ordering. Soon afterward we split up and played the field by attending two sessions within the same time frame. I went to a session about crowd sourcing:cheap content for a media-manic age while Alex and KB wend to a session about media promotion and social networking. Then we ate lunch at Chipotle and spent the rest of the day at the BEA. At the conference we also learned what other schools are doing in terms of opening the door to the integrated media lab. Meanwhile, Dr. Barnett went to a panel about integrity versus 'good' radio. We had some good conversations afterward about the things that we learned.
Tomorrow is the last day of the Conference. Check back for more on Saturday's events. Tonight we roam the city. I'll let you know if we get into any trouble.

BEA Vegas Day 2
I'm already a day behind but we are already a day in and the conference has been great. We found out that our hotel is only two blocks from the convention center so we were able to walk and we had an awesome yogurt and granola breakfast. We attended several sessions throughout the day including a panel discussion on the benefits and potential of internet radio. We also attended a panel about creating partnerships with other media companies called "Running with the Big Dogs" and we sit in on a panel about the evolution of social media and ethical concerns regarding its use.
We also got to see the main strip in Vegas tonight. Oddly enough, we came to find out that we would have been able to see it last night if we had walked out the other side of the building that we ate last night. We saw the water show at the Belagio and we also visited Hard Rock Cafe and The Mirage. Vegas is a happening town in certain places.
Luckily I haven't lost any money yet to the slot machines, but that's probably because I haven't played. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Nonetheless, It's been a long day but a good one and I can't wait for tomorrow.

BEA Vegas Day 1
We arrived in the city of Vegas at approx. 10:40pm EST. As soon as we stepped off the plane we were blasted with a swell of warm air. The airport was dimly lit and neon lights accented every sign at every corner. But I didn't waste much time looking around because I'd spent the past four hours wedged against the window seat of an aircraft hoping my bladder wouldn't explode.
After hiking across the labyrinth that was the airport, we made our way outside and flagged down a cab. Our driver was from Russia. Nice guy. Expensive ride, but still a nice guy.
Nonetheless, we finally made it to 3500 Paradise Road, home of the Best Western Mardi Gras, which will be our home for the next four days. We then proceeded to check in and crammed into a dingy elevator that made Petrik's elevator look like a something out of a fairy tale.
The weight of our bags made the walk seem more daunting than it really was, but we eventually made it to our suite. However, we were unable to stay for very long because we were all had a dire need to feed.
And so, we flipped through the local directory only to find nothing of importance and hit the streets in search of somewhere to nom. After passing by six scantly built newsstands filled with "pleasure" magazines and following the monorail for a good 15 minutes we decided to stop. I don't even remeber the name of the hotel we went into, but we followed the pretty sign to nowhere and went inside. It was here that we settled on an Italian restraunt.
After a good meal and a good talk we hoofed our way back to Paradise Road following the spectacle of sad side walks. It was almost like we were walking through an abandoned theme park filled with strippers, minus the strippers.
Anyhow; we made it back to our cove safe and sound and here I am writing to you...slipping in an out of what may turn into a comma while I watch the world throw their money away and I prep for an early wake up call.
Check back soon. I'll keep you posted on all of tomorrow's events here at the BEA in Las Vegas. Until next time, this is Nick signing off.

New Directors
It is my pleasure to announce the Bellarmine Radio 2009-2010 team of directors.
I would like to extend my thanks to Donnie, who has been our station manager for the past 2 years and Justin who served as News/Sports Director this past year. Both will be graduating this may and we wish them the best of luck!
I'd also like to give a shout-out to Justin, Dave, Chuck Lightnin', Jill and all of those involved on the news crew. Reed especially for making athletics an important part of our programming as well as all of the DJs including: Austin, Dan, Sharayah, Nick Welsh, Jess, Justin, Donnie, Nate, Whitney, Alex, Natalie, Eric, Bob and of course...Sparky.
We had more live programming this year than ever before with 10 shows that aired weekly, and we set a new record for listernship during the NCAA Division II Mens Basketball Playoffs with over 644 unique IP addresses logged, which caused our server to crash (not a problem you want to have, but a feat in and of itself).
We brought over 18 artists to campus this past year as part of our concert series, we had an interview with The Dropkick Murphys and the makers of Red vs. Blue. We hosted our first 24 hour broadcast marathon and we greatly increased our visibility on campus.
I'm sure there's more that I have left out, but I cannot begin to say enough about how good this year has been and how much we have accomplished. Thanks again to everyone that participated in Bellarmine Radio: Directors, Staff, DJs, Friends, and anyone that tuned in wherever you may be.
I look forward to next year and I hope to build upon this past years success.
Best,
Nick Mattingly
