Today's Word (9/21/09)

Hey everyone! Thanks for tuning in to today's edition of Word to Your Mother, with Nick and Whitney.

It's been pretty gross and rainy outside today in Louisville, so today's word is sulky.

I think our playlist was pretty fitting, so here it is:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Mary Jane's Last Dance
Dave Matthews Band - Crash into Me
Fiona Apple - Criminal
Counting Crows - Colorblind
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Greenday - Basketcase

Thanks again for tuning in!

Check us out again next week, Monday's at 5pm.

Don't forget the rest of the line up either, Monday's are pretty happening.

and as always

WORD TO YOUR MOTHER!

Bellarmine Radio in the Community

This past Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, students from Bellarmine Radio and the Concord went to Breckenridge Franklin Elementary to help with their new media program. Bellarmine students mentored the 4th and 5th grade students on basic news writing and broadcast skills. This effort was part of the weekly "Power Hour" program at Breckenridge Franklin Elementary. If you are interested in participating in this program please contact Dr. Gail Henson or Dr. Kyle Barnett. Please note: the weekly Power Hour is held from 9:30-10:30am on Fridays.

A Late Welcome Back

Hey guys. It's been a almost a month since school started, but I wanted to officially welcome you back to school, or wherever you are. The Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song has some exciting things in store, to try to keep up with all the awesomeness that Bellarmine Radio has had in store for us.

We went to the free concert in the Exploding Cube, and loved it. The Highlight Reel, one of the headliners for the concert, has expressed an interest in appearing on BMKoKHoS, so keep an ear out for that! Other students have been in contact with us, trying to set up either an interview or send in some of their original music, to play on the air. Any and all musicians who want to be on the air should get in contact with myself or Jess, and we'd love to make it happen!

Have fun this semester, and don't forget to listen to bellarmineradio.com! (And of course, the Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song, Tuesday nights at 8:00!) : )

No Billy Mitchell Tonight

A couple of factors have contributed to the unfortunate cancellation of the Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song. Lots of big words... anyway, there is some fairly inclement weather on the forecast, and I couldn't get a guest to co-host with me. Also, with the system still in transition, it's easier to hold off on the show until further notice. Hopefully next week. I'll keep you guys in the loop!

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Hey all! It's Nick Welsh, here to tell you that I will indeed air the Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song tonight, June 9th. My guest host this evening will be the lovely Jodi Brashear. Get ready for some techno, upbeat tracks, and fun times tonight, Tuesday, at 8:00 (eastern)!!

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

BMKoKHoS

The Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song will be airing tonight at 8:00 as usual! It's gonna be me, Nick, and a special guest-host, Brad Shader. Tune in and enjoy some awesome beats!

BEA Vegas Day 4-1/2, 5, Going on 6

We attended a session about integrated media, the web, and internet radio on the last day of the conference. We also met a professor from Western Kentucky University involved with their student radio station. The conference was a great networking opportunity and it allowed us to see what other schools are doing.

All in all this trip has been a great experience. We learned valuable information about new media, we are inspired and full of new ideas, and using this conference as a benchmark, we feel really good about where we are and how far we have come.

Here's the sad part of the story. Due to mechanical issues, our flight was cancelled after numerous delays. As a result, Alex and I will be missing finals on Monday and will have to reschedule them for later in the week. But we get a bonus night in Vegas if that's any consolation.

Sad part number two. We are exhausted. We are now bunked in a Super 8 motel, and we lost more money in Vegas. However, the Super 8 that we are staying in is "The Largest Super 8 in the World" so that's kinda cool.

Can't wait to wake up at 4:00 AM so we can catch our flight in the morning. Be sure to catch us sometime next week and we'll tell you all about the BEA and LV Nevada.

Peace.

-Nick

A Word of Caution for the Vegas Guys

Stumbled onto this (not with the application Stumble, but by hitting 'random' on Explosm. Hopefully it's not too little too late. ;)

Update on Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song: Summer Show, Dance Show during Finals.

Greetings! Nick here, from the Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song! I wanted to let you guys know that The BMKoKHoS WILL continue during the summer, same day, same time! I believe the Sparky Bunny Honey Party Power Hour will air after my show, so tune in to check it out!

Unfortunately, Jess won't be able to host with me most of the time, as she will be in her hometown of Evansville most of the summer, with the exception of London for a study abroad program for a month.

I'm gonna try to have a guest host every week, some from the radio, some of my friends from high school or college, etc.

Have a good finals week and don't forget to tune in this week, as we will be having a super fun dance show, with such hits as Sandstorm playing! Check it out!

BEA Vegas Day 3

As we near the end of our trip I have come to the conclusion that time and space do not exist in Las Vegas. The architecture is very strange. Nothing seems real, everything is a replica of something else, you see the same 10-12 mega resorts on the horizon no matter where you go, there are no clocks in the casinos, and the signage is oddly placed literally blocks away from the actual location of the places that they represent. I never know where I am or what time it is, but I guess none of that matters in Vegas.

Oh well...let's get to the nuts and bolts.

Today we slept in until 10:00am. That's 1:00pm back in Louisville, KY. We also had muffins for breakfast, which is ironic because I have this weird dilemma where I can't stand the sound of the word muffin. I'm not sure why, I think I just needed to have a word to hate and that happened to be the one I settled on.

But I was able to conquer my fear in the process of ordering. Soon afterward we split up and played the field by attending two sessions within the same time frame. I went to a session about crowd sourcing:cheap content for a media-manic age while Alex and KB wend to a session about media promotion and social networking. Then we ate lunch at Chipotle and spent the rest of the day at the BEA. At the conference we also learned what other schools are doing in terms of opening the door to the integrated media lab. Meanwhile, Dr. Barnett went to a panel about integrity versus 'good' radio. We had some good conversations afterward about the things that we learned.

Tomorrow is the last day of the Conference. Check back for more on Saturday's events. Tonight we roam the city. I'll let you know if we get into any trouble.

BEA Vegas Day 2

I'm already a day behind but we are already a day in and the conference has been great. We found out that our hotel is only two blocks from the convention center so we were able to walk and we had an awesome yogurt and granola breakfast. We attended several sessions throughout the day including a panel discussion on the benefits and potential of internet radio. We also attended a panel about creating partnerships with other media companies called "Running with the Big Dogs" and we sit in on a panel about the evolution of social media and ethical concerns regarding its use.

We also got to see the main strip in Vegas tonight. Oddly enough, we came to find out that we would have been able to see it last night if we had walked out the other side of the building that we ate last night. We saw the water show at the Belagio and we also visited Hard Rock Cafe and The Mirage. Vegas is a happening town in certain places.

Luckily I haven't lost any money yet to the slot machines, but that's probably because I haven't played. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Nonetheless, It's been a long day but a good one and I can't wait for tomorrow.

BEA Vegas Day 1

We arrived in the city of Vegas at approx. 10:40pm EST. As soon as we stepped off the plane we were blasted with a swell of warm air. The airport was dimly lit and neon lights accented every sign at every corner. But I didn't waste much time looking around because I'd spent the past four hours wedged against the window seat of an aircraft hoping my bladder wouldn't explode.

After hiking across the labyrinth that was the airport, we made our way outside and flagged down a cab. Our driver was from Russia. Nice guy. Expensive ride, but still a nice guy.

Nonetheless, we finally made it to 3500 Paradise Road, home of the Best Western Mardi Gras, which will be our home for the next four days. We then proceeded to check in and crammed into a dingy elevator that made Petrik's elevator look like a something out of a fairy tale.

The weight of our bags made the walk seem more daunting than it really was, but we eventually made it to our suite. However, we were unable to stay for very long because we were all had a dire need to feed.

And so, we flipped through the local directory only to find nothing of importance and hit the streets in search of somewhere to nom. After passing by six scantly built newsstands filled with "pleasure" magazines and following the monorail for a good 15 minutes we decided to stop. I don't even remeber the name of the hotel we went into, but we followed the pretty sign to nowhere and went inside. It was here that we settled on an Italian restraunt.

After a good meal and a good talk we hoofed our way back to Paradise Road following the spectacle of sad side walks. It was almost like we were walking through an abandoned theme park filled with strippers, minus the strippers.

Anyhow; we made it back to our cove safe and sound and here I am writing to you...slipping in an out of what may turn into a comma while I watch the world throw their money away and I prep for an early wake up call.

Check back soon. I'll keep you posted on all of tomorrow's events here at the BEA in Las Vegas. Until next time, this is Nick signing off.

New Directors

It is my pleasure to announce the Bellarmine Radio 2009-2010 team of directors.
  • Station Manager-Nick Mattingly
  • Production Director-Bob Lowrey
  • Program Director-Alex Koch
  • Director of Public Relations-Whitney Cecil
  • Director of Digital Media-Natalie Fisher
  • News/Sports Director-Austin Silver
We have had a great year and a great semester. I would like to send a special thanks to everyone that helped take Bellarmine Radio to new heights in 2008-2009.

I would like to extend my thanks to Donnie, who has been our station manager for the past 2 years and Justin who served as News/Sports Director this past year. Both will be graduating this may and we wish them the best of luck!

I'd also like to give a shout-out to Justin, Dave, Chuck Lightnin', Jill and all of those involved on the news crew. Reed especially for making athletics an important part of our programming as well as all of the DJs including: Austin, Dan, Sharayah, Nick Welsh, Jess, Justin, Donnie, Nate, Whitney, Alex, Natalie, Eric, Bob and of course...Sparky.

We had more live programming this year than ever before with 10 shows that aired weekly, and we set a new record for listernship during the NCAA Division II Mens Basketball Playoffs with over 644 unique IP addresses logged, which caused our server to crash (not a problem you want to have, but a feat in and of itself).

We brought over 18 artists to campus this past year as part of our concert series, we had an interview with The Dropkick Murphys and the makers of Red vs. Blue. We hosted our first 24 hour broadcast marathon and we greatly increased our visibility on campus.

I'm sure there's more that I have left out, but I cannot begin to say enough about how good this year has been and how much we have accomplished. Thanks again to everyone that participated in Bellarmine Radio: Directors, Staff, DJs, Friends, and anyone that tuned in wherever you may be.

I look forward to next year and I hope to build upon this past years success.

Best,

Nick Mattingly

Bellarmine Radio knows Lacrosse!

Music is not our only passion at Bellarmine Radio, though you'd be forgiven for thinking so. We also have a fair number of sports enthusiasts on staff. Our first live show was Donnie Kornick and Justin Stafford's Bellarmine Radio Sports Talk (or "Bust" for short), which still airs Monday nights at 8:00 pm. For some time now, the station has been carrying as many basketball games as we can. We've also done a few baseball events (we hope to do more). The station is always seeking to add announcers that can provide more coverage for Bellarmine athletics.

But recently, we finally have been able to cover some lacrosse games. We've wanted to do so for a while, but have been unable. Why? Lack of knowledgeable staff. But now, we have a number of staff members with lacrosse knowledge and, in some cases, playing experience. Bellarmine Radio's own Reed Peterson has been leading the way in covering lacrosse. After the first game we covered a few weeks ago, we got positive responses from listeners across the U.S. and Canada. We're glad for the response and hope to continue the coverage.

Muzak is bankrupt. Elevator music in jeopardy.

While you were listening to Lily Allen/Vivian Girls/Air France/the amazing Dark Was the Night compilation (all newly added to Bellarmine Radio!), the company that brings you elevator music filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Where do we go for all of our favorite music-related bankruptcy news? The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones' "Bankruptcy Beat," of course. No, we're not kidding. As Prince once suggested, these may be signs of the times.

Hexacordon Bleu: The Beginning of the End of the Beginning

so, i just finished writing a paper for my music history class about the hexachord, and it's relevance to modern music and music education. suffice to say, i was overwhelmed with joy.

but it got me thinking; i listen to a LOT of different music. so i start feeling like maybe the Zakk Wylde Power Sermon may need to start reflecting that.

i know that changing the format would cause nothing but drama for the directors, but the thought is still swimming around in the back of my mind

so, let me know what ya'll think. i would just be changing one of the nights (probably thursdays) to a mix of eclectic jams that i think are pretty good (which means they ARE!).

of course, maybe i'm just rambling.

Ben Lee at Bellarmine -- This Friday night!

We here at Bellarmine Radio are very excited about this Friday night's Ben Lee show at Bellarmine University. The show is in no small part due to our own program director and DJ Alex Koch's hard work. All of us at Bellarmine Radio have been working hard on getting the word out on the show. The show starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $5 for Bellarmine students and $11 for the general public.

His new album, The Rebirth of Venus, is only weeks away from release -- and there are only three tour dates on his itinerary at present -- two shows in Los Angeles and one in Louisville. Part of the proceeds from the new album (release date: February 10) will be donated to FINCA's Village Banking Program, which supports the world's lowest-income women entrepreneurs.

Ben Lee will be playing a stripped-down set of songs both new and old. When your career starts when you're sixteen, it's expected that you might have an impressive back catalog. At the ripe old age of 30, Ben Lee continues to cover new territory.

Louisville's best indie rock blog, Backseat Sandbar, has a nice synopsis of Lee's career to date here. Also, see the Ben Lee preview piece over at Metromix Louisville by venerable Louisville rock critic Jeffrey Lee Puckett (How's that for a Kentucky name? Sounds like he was born with a mint julep in his hand).

Also on the bill is Louisville's Chemic, which will also be performing with a special line-up for Friday night's show. As one of the most innovative and interesting indie pop bands to emerge out of Louisville in recent years, they've quickly become Bellarmine radio favorites.

Sparky Bunny Has Entered the Building

Hello all,
This is a statement from Sparky Bunny as channeled by Austin Silver: Submit to the bunny. Have you ever seen a creature as cute a baby rabbit? Of course not. Please send cash now. Watch this space for further developments. End of channel-trance. End of transmission.

Austin Silver nor Bellarmine Radio accept any responsibility for the opinions expressed above. Austin Silver wants you to know he will always be bebop210, but only sometimes, Sparky Bunny. Sparky would you like you to know that he prefers Timothy Hay to Alfalfa Hay which he considers "sub-standard."

We hope you all understand the concept of The Unnamed Show. We couldn't think of a name, were calling it unnamed temporarily, then finally settled on "The Unnamed Show" for kicks and giggles. Not too hard to remember, we think.
This week we had rather unexpected, but more than welcome guest by the name of Amber. She took some cool shots for our upcoming article in the seasonal Bellarmine Magazine. So keep and eye out for that!

Rescheducation: Circumventing the Middle Man

so here's the skinny from my narrow view

bellarmine sports gets radio coverage (awesome)
the time that they want/need to broadcast is thursdays at 8 (less awesome, my friends show is then)
friends show gets moved (neutral for me)
they need a longer time slot, as sports have a nack for being either too long or too short (uh-oh)
they are now in a time slot of 8-10 on thursdays (less awesome, i move back an hour, but still not bad)
there SHOULD be some buffer time b/w the sports webcast and my metal/harcore/grind show (VERY understandable)

BOTTOM LINE: The Zakk Wylde Power Sermon on thursdays now will be at 10:30PM EST. I am A-OK with this change, and embrace it! i only hope that those of you who have been enjoying my mix of what you will NEVER hear on ANY other radio station will follow faithfully to this new thursday hour.

NOTE: tuesdays remain unchanged (yet)

Bugs for Breakfast

Hey it's Nick from "The 502". Be sure to tune in every Monday at 4pm to hear some of Louisville's best local artists. We'll talk about upcoming shows, interview some of your favorite artists and play music from landmark locals such as Slint, Billy Prince Bonnie, and William Pickett (best know for his hit single-Land of a Thousand Dances). Better yet, this year we will be stretching the realm of local music to include works from artists as far South as Bowling Green, Kentucky and as far North as Bloomington, Indiana. Oh, and feel free to make a request via the portal our homepage, or by calling at 502-473-3415.

Stylinguistics: Lining Up the Dominos

so, one thing i really like about my show (and hopefully you like too) is the different in-studio co-hosts. sooooooo, if you would like to be on the show to chat about the tunes playing, the artists, anything at all really, then let me know! email me at rlowrey01@bellarmine.edu to work it out ya'll.

i guess i SHOULD put up the lists of songs i've played so far.

TOO BAD!!!!

i'm anti-establishment, therefore i will not do what other do.

in all actuality, i can't put up my playlists for past shows. not because i'm cool and original and stuff (although, i am. i mean, come on! have you seen me! i'm the archetype of cool college kid) but rather i deleted the old playlists, and don't remember what songs were on them. i'll see if i can dig up the old text documents for them though if it REALLY means that much to you guys (but it probably doesn't)

thanks to ya'll who listen to the show. tell your friends and stuff. or make it a get together of friends!

metal heads unite!

My First Blog

This is my first blog. Well, my first blog for Bellarmine Radio. I also blog on Tumblr.com, which is pretty awesome. Mine and Jess's show, The Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song, is full of upbeat fun music. Plus, we are going to talk about stuff happening on campus. Such as...upcoming plays or concerts or basketball games or whatever; also controversial stuff that people want to know about. We also encourage people to tell us what to talk about, so that we can actually discuss things that people want to hear.

Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song

I just wanted to make a post for our show before Nick Welsh did. I win. I'm the better co-host. VICTORY! (insert evil laugh)
-Jess

Zakk Wylde is the king of a-minor pentatonic

Ok, so i have gotten a couple questions about the title "The Zakk Wylde Power Hour/Power Sermon/Metal Mass/gobbledygook", so here's the skinny.

Zakk Wylde's Black Label society is a band. My friend bobby steurer and i discuss them often. when posed with the question of what to name my show, the first image that popped into my head (for some reason) was Zakk Wylde. i have no idea why. so i thought "The Zakk Wylde Power Hour" would be a good name (1 for being strange, 2 for being an inside joke)

I changed it from Power Hour to Power Sermon because Austin Silver's show already contains "Power Hour", and i would feel like a big jerk to have stolen his stuff! So it became "Power Sermon" off the top of my head.

Jay Jones suggested "Metal Mass". I'm not sure if i will change it or not. I don't want to put the directors to any more of a hassle than they already have to deal with.

I look forward to being the only source of REAL heavy metal/hardcore/grind in the louisville area (as far as radio is concerned). hope you all enjoy!
